Giving animals in the Bahamas the chance to gain their Second Wind.

Island life often evokes visions of sun, sand, and sea with balmy days and breezy nights. But for many animals in the Bahamas—whether dogs, cats, birds, or even the famous swimming pigs—the reality is far from idyllic. Life for these resilient creatures is often a daily struggle.

With limited food sources, many rely on scraps or scavenging to survive. Fresh water can be hard to come by, especially during the dry season. For shelter, animals retreat to bushes, hide under buildings, or find any place that offers minimal protection, which is not always safe.

Beyond these hardships, they face dangers from traffic, fights with other animals, and mistreatment by humans who may see them as pests rather than living beings in need of compassion. Even iconic animals like the original swimming pigs, loved by tourists from all over the world, depend heavily on human care and can suffer from neglect or poor treatment when that attention fades.

At Second Wind, we believe every animal deserves the chance to live a happy, healthy life. Whether sponsoring and participating in vet clinics in the Bahamas, or facilitating adoptions in both the US and Canada, we are committed to giving these incredible animals the love, care, and second chances they need to gain their Second Wind.
